About

A career devoted to the science of metals

From Jadavpur University and IIT Kharagpur to a doctorate at TU Delft and nearly three decades at Shibpur.

Biography

Profile

Manojit Ghosh is a Professor in the Department of Metallurgy and Materials Engineering at the Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology (IIEST), Shibpur, and Chair Professor at the institute’s Chirasree Centre for Sustainable Infrastructure Development (CCSID). He served as Head of the Department from 2019 to 2021 and has taught and researched at Shibpur since 1998.

His research integrates physical metallurgy — crystallographic texture, microstructure–property correlation and strengthening mechanisms — with modern processing and data-driven design. Rooted in doctoral work at TU Delft on the warm forming of Al–Mg–Si alloys, it now spans ultrafine-grained aluminium alloys, metal-matrix composites, high-entropy alloys, coatings and biomaterials, increasingly supported by machine learning and multi-scale modelling.

He leads the ₹7-crore ANRF-PAIR programme on additively manufactured high-entropy-alloy composites, and has sustained international collaborations with Ghent University (SPARC, DST-BELSPRO, Erasmus Mundus), the University of Michigan (Visiting Scientist, 2023) and the University of Toronto (Mitacs).
